New minimum wage and affordable housing and illegal basement apartments and the need for new strategies all around

Lets just run a quick analysis on affordable housing.

Assume: you earn minimum wage

Assume: you pay normal taxes

Assume: you pay 35% of your net income on rent, the recommended percentage for a healthy budget.

Ready? Let’s analyze:

Great! You have enough income to afford $754 a month in rent on a healthy budget. Where healthy means you have enough money for food, clothes and deodorant on a regular basis, and can afford a ride to work.

No problem. So far so good. $750 is a lot of money. This should be fine.

Let’s just have a quick look on realtor.ca to see how many places there are to rent for less than $800 a month:
